INDIA · WORKING TIME

Working hours by state

India has no single working-hours law. Offices, IT companies and agencies are governed by the Shops and Establishments Act of the state they operate in, and the daily limit, spread-over, overtime cap and night-shift rules all differ across them. A multi-state employer has as many rulebooks as it has states.

Each value on these pages links to the source it was verified against, and anything we could not verify is marked as such rather than filled in from a neighbouring state — which is the most common error in published summaries of this subject.

8 states verified so far

We publish a state page once its rules have been checked against the Act, the amending Act or a gazette notification. The remaining states and union territories are still being verified and are deliberately absent rather than filled in from a neighbour's figures — which is exactly how the wrong numbers for this subject spread.

How to read these pages

State rules change by notification, and IT/ITES exemptions in particular are frequently time-bound and renewed separately — an exemption that existed last year may have lapsed. Treat these pages as a starting map with its sources attached, not as a current legal position. General information, not legal advice.
